Your own vehicle and its fuel (or the rented 4x4 and its fuel), tolls and lunch are not included.

Is it suitable for families?

Yes. Parents, spouses, ladies and children are welcome to join the convoy. Guests with serious medical conditions (heart problems, epilepsy, slipped disc) and expecting mothers cannot join.

How cold does it get?

Temperatures mostly stay between −10 °C and −30 °C, so full layered winter clothing, waterproof snow boots, gloves and caps are essential.

Do I need snow chains?

Yes. Snow chains and tow ropes are on the mandatory vehicle checklist and are not included. Every vehicle is inspected at the briefing in Shimla on Day 1.

Till when can I register?

Registration for each departure closes 15 days before Day 1 – there are no last-minute or same-week bookings, because permits, vehicles and stays are arranged in advance. Departures within 15 days and past dates show as Closed.

What are the expedition rules?

Every participant must follow the instructions of the expedition leader and the convoy rules – driving order, speed, walkie-talkie instructions, no drinking and driving, no off-road driving without permission, and respect for local people and the environment. If a participant breaks these rules or puts the group at risk, the expedition leader may end that participant’s expedition at once; no refund or claim of any kind will be given in that case.

How do I book and pay?

Fill in the registration form on this page. Seats are limited – a 20% advance of the expedition fee confirms your registration (with a rented 4x4, the full 4x4 rent is also paid in advance), and the balance must be paid on Day 1 in Shimla, before the expedition starts. Example: 1 person with a rented Thar pays ₹9,000 + ₹48,000 = ₹57,000 in advance and ₹36,000 on Day 1. Cancel 30 or more days before departure for a 100% refund; cancellations within 29 days are non-refundable. 5% GST applies only if a GST invoice is required.

What is the best time for this trip?

June – mid October: both routes open (Kinnaur and Kunzum La / Chandratal), best season. May: Kinnaur route open, Kunzum La usually closed. mid December – mid March: Winter Spiti Expedition via Kinnaur – snow, −20 °C, 4x4 only.

How do I reach Shimla?

By road from Chandigarh / Shimla – via Kinnaur (Sangla, Kalpa, Nako) – open all year except heavy snow. By road from Manali – via Atal Tunnel, Kunzum La and Chandratal – June to October. By air / train – Nearest airports are Chandigarh, Shimla and Bhuntar; nearest big station is Chandigarh / Kalka.

What should I carry?

Woollens and windproof jacket all year; Sunscreen and sunglasses – the sun is strong at 4,000 m; Original ID (Inner Line Permit near the border); Cash – very few ATMs after Rampur; Power bank – power cuts are common.
