Route and high passes on the Manali–Leh highway

The route leaves Manali through Solang and the 9.02 km Atal Tunnel, so there is no Rohtang permit to arrange. From Keylong and Jispa the road climbs into the Lahaul high country, crosses into Ladakh at Sarchu and runs over the More Plains before the final pass, Tanglang La, drops you towards the Indus at Upshi.

The two Zanskar itineraries leave the highway at Darcha and cross Shinku La into Zanskar, reaching Leh via Padum, Rangdum and Lamayuru. They rejoin the highway on the way home.

The Manali–Leh highway has long stretches of broken road on the More Plains and at Pang, and the Zanskar routes cross Shinku La on gravel. A Himalayan 411 or 450 makes these days easier.

Safety on the road: the marshal sets the pace and stops at every pass, the mechanic rides at the back of the group, and the backup vehicle follows with luggage so you can ride light. If a rider feels unwell at altitude, the backup vehicle can carry the rider down while the bike is ridden by our team.

What to bring

  • Valid two-wheeler driving licence and a government photo ID
  • Riding jacket, gloves, boots and a full-face helmet if you own one
  • Thermals and a down jacket: nights at Sarchu, Hanle and Tso Moriri are cold even in August
  • Waterproof covers for luggage and phone
  • Sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses
  • Cash: ATMs and card payments are rare outside Keylong, Padum and Leh

Good to know

  • Indian nationals pay the Ladakh environment fee (about ₹400 plus ₹20 per day). Foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit, and Hanle and Umling La have extra rules.
  • Fuel stations are far apart: fill up at Tandi, and at every pump you pass in Zanskar and Ladakh.
  • Mobile signal is patchy after Keylong; BSNL and Jio postpaid work best in Ladakh.
  • Fuel, meals and permit fees are not included in the rates. Ask us what your quote includes.

How do I book a seat on a fixed departure?

What is the best time for a Manali to Leh bike tour?

The Manali–Leh highway is usually open from June to mid-October, depending on snow on Baralacha La and Tanglang La. Shinku La on the Zanskar routes also depends on snow clearance. July, August and September are the most popular months. We confirm road status close to your dates.

Which bike is best for these routes?

The Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 or Himalayan 411 is the best choice for the high passes and rough stretches like the More Plains, Shinku La and the Changthang roads, thanks to longer suspension travel and better ground clearance. The Classic 350 is comfortable and reliable if you ride at an easy pace.

Do I need permits for Nubra, Pangong, Hanle and Tso Moriri?

No Rohtang permit is needed because the route uses the Atal Tunnel. In Ladakh, Indian nationals pay the Ladakh environment fee (about ₹400 plus ₹20 per day wildlife fee) and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit. Hanle and Umling La have extra rules for foreign nationals, so tell us your nationality when you book and we will confirm what is allowed.

Can I ride a Manali rental bike inside Ladakh?

Rental bikes registered outside Ladakh are generally not allowed for sightseeing inside Ladakh under local union rules. If that affects your plan, enter Leh City as the pickup point in the booking form and we will confirm the best arrangement for your itinerary.

How do I avoid altitude sickness on this ride?

Every itinerary halts at Jispa (3,200 m) on the first night and includes an easy day around Leh before the Ladakh passes. Day 2 of the Ladakh Loop is a long climb over three high passes, so arrive rested. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and tell the marshal at once if you feel headache, nausea or breathlessness.
