An early start for the long, rough ride back over Kunzum La and along the Chandra valley to the Atal Tunnel and Manali. Bike return after inspection.
Route, passes and night halts
From Manali the road runs through the Atal Tunnel to Khoksar and Gramphu, then along the Chandra river past Chhatru and Batal, where a side road leads to Chandratal. Kunzum La takes you into Spiti at Losar and down to Kaza.
The circuit follows the Spiti river past Dhankar and Tabo to Nako and the Kinnaur border, drops into the Sutlej valley at Khab and climbs to Kalpa and the Sangla valley. It returns via Rampur, Narkanda and Jalori Pass.

Rough roads: the Gramphu – Batal – Kunzum La stretch is unpaved with water crossings, and the Kinnaur road has landslide zones. A Himalayan 411 or 450 is the best choice. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the Kinnaur border area between Kaza and Reckong Peo.

Join a fixed departure
Ride with a group on a fixed date. Departures leave on the 1st, 10th, 18th and 27th of each month from June to September, while Kunzum La is open. Dates below are shown for the Spiti & Kinnaur Circuit; the booking form shows dates for every tour. Ask us on WhatsApp for the group price.
Before you ride
What to bring
- Valid two-wheeler driving licence and a government photo ID
- Riding jacket, gloves, boots and a full-face helmet if you own one
- Waterproof riding boots or covers: the Batal road has water crossings
- Thermals and a down jacket: Chandratal and Kaza are cold at night even in July
- Sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses
- Cash: ATMs are only at Kaza, Reckong Peo and Rampur and often run dry
Good to know
- Fuel: fill up in Manali or Tandi; the Kaza pump is the only one in Spiti, and the next is at Reckong Peo.
- Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the Kinnaur border stretch (Sumdo – Nako – Khab); Indian nationals do not.
- Mobile signal: BSNL and Jio work in Kaza and a few villages, with long gaps elsewhere.
- Chandratal camps are open from about mid-June to September.
- Fuel, meals and permit fees are not included in the rates. Ask us what your quote includes.
Spiti Valley bike tour: frequently asked questions
How many days do I need for a Spiti Valley bike tour?
Five days is enough for Chandratal, Kaza and the villages around it on a round trip from Manali. Nine days lets you ride the full circuit through Tabo, Nako and Kinnaur and come home over Jalori Pass. On custom dates you can add rest days.
Is there a fixed departure price for Spiti?
Fixed group departures run on set dates in the season. Send us your preferred date on WhatsApp and we will share the per-person fixed departure price. For custom dates, the costing table and booking form on this page give an instant estimate.
How much does the tour cost?
The cost depends on your dates, group size and the services you choose. Per-day rates: Royal Enfield Classic 350 ₹1,500; Classic 500, Himalayan 411 and KTM Duke 390 ₹1,800; Himalayan 450 ₹2,500; accommodation ₹1,750 per person; marshal ₹3,500 (₹2,000 plus ₹1,500 for the marshal's bike); mechanic ₹2,000; backup vehicle ₹6,000. When is Kunzum La open?
Kunzum La usually opens in June and closes with the first heavy snow in October or November. The Kinnaur side via Shimla is open for longer. We confirm road status close to your dates.
Which bike is best for Spiti?
The Royal Enfield Himalayan 411 or 450 handles the rough Gramphu – Batal – Kunzum La road and the water crossings best. The Classic 350 is fine at an easy pace if you are comfortable on gravel.
Do I need permits for Spiti?
Indian nationals need no permit. Foreign nationals need an Inner Line Permit for the Kinnaur border area between Sumdo and Khab, which we arrange. No Rohtang permit is needed because the route uses the Atal Tunnel.
How do I handle the altitude in Spiti?
Chandratal (4,300 m) is high for a first night, so drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and ride slowly. If anyone feels unwell, we can swap the first night to Batal or go straight to Kaza. Tell the marshal at once about headache, nausea or breathlessness.
