🛣️ Road Opening Dates 2026
Manali–Kaza via Kunzum Pass: Mid-June to mid-October (weather dependent). The Rohtang Pass section requires an online Rohtang Permit (₹550 petrol / ₹700 diesel).
Shimla–Kinnaur–Spiti via NH-5: Open almost year-round. The preferred route for early-season (April–May) and late-season (November) travel. Ideal for gradual acclimatization.
🏔️ Altitude & Acclimatization
Spiti Valley average altitude: 12,500 ft (3,800 m). Kunzum Pass: 14,931 ft. Chicham Bridge: 13,596 ft. Chandertaal Lake: 14,100 ft.
The Chandigarh–Kinnaur–Spiti route allows gradual altitude gain over 3–4 days — far safer than flying into Manali. Drink plenty of water and avoid overexertion on Day 1–2 in Kaza. AMS medication (Diamox) is available in Kaza. At Kaza (3,800 m) and higher, oxygen is roughly 40% lower than at sea level — Rohtang Pass sits at 3,978 m and Kunzum Pass at 4,551 m. Rest on arrival, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol above 3,000 m and watch for AMS symptoms such as headache, nausea and breathlessness.
🪪 Inner Line Permit — Spiti Valley
Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Spiti Valley and restricted areas near the Indo-Tibet border (Chitkul, Nako, Tabo, Kaza, Kibber). Indian nationals do not need an ILP for Spiti.

From Delhi, take an overnight Volvo bus or train to Chandigarh (4–5 hrs) or Shimla (10 hrs by Shatabdi + toy train). Mobile network: BSNL works best across Kinnaur and Spiti. Airtel/Jio available in major towns (Recong Peo, Kaza). No connectivity at Chandertaal, Nako or high mountain passes.
ATMs: Available at Rampur and Recong Peo (Kinnaur) and Kaza (Spiti). Carry sufficient cash as ATMs are unreliable in remote areas. UPI works intermittently where internet is available. The last reliable fuel pump and ATM are at Recong Peo; the Kaza pump occasionally runs dry, so we carry spare fuel. Carry ₹15,000–₹20,000 in cash for the Spiti leg.
