Choose a trek by level and season
Levels are a guide. Easy treks suit anyone who walks regularly; moderate treks need good fitness; challenging and strenuous treks cross high passes over several days and need trekking experience. Seasons are the usual months when the route is open.

How to prepare
- Walk or jog regularly for a few weeks before a multi-day trek
- Break in your trekking shoes before the trip
- Carry layers: days are warm, nights at camp are cold
- Spend a night in Manali before starting a high trek

- Snow on high passes can delay or close a route early or late in the season
- Mobile signal is not available on most multi-day routes
- Foreign nationals may need an Inner Line Permit near the Kinnaur border

Frequently asked questions
When is the trekking season?
Short treks around Manali are possible from April to November. High treks over Shingo La, Baralacha La and into Zanskar, Lahaul and Spiti usually run from late June to September, when the passes are free of snow. Kinnaur treks run from June to October.
How fit do I need to be?
Short treks need normal fitness. Multi-day treks over high passes need good fitness and some trekking experience. Tell us your experience and we will suggest a suitable route.
Do I need permits?
Most treks in Himachal need no permit for Indian nationals. Some areas near the border, such as parts of Kinnaur, need an Inner Line Permit for foreign nationals. We confirm what your route needs.
