Picking the right month matters more than picking the right hotel. Here is how the year splits across our destinations.
Himachal, Uttarakhand and Kashmir are at their best. Chaar Dhaam opens late April or early May. Book six to eight weeks ahead — this is when hotels sell out and rates climb.
The only reliable stretch for Leh Ladakh and the full Spiti circuit, once Khardung La, Chang La and the Manali–Leh highway clear. Amarnath Yatra runs July to August.
Clear skies, thin crowds and rates about 15–20% below peak. Ladakh stays open into early October. Rajasthan and Kerala come into season as the north cools down.
Snow at Solang, Kufri and Gulmarg, with Christmas and New Year the costliest week of the year. Rajasthan, Goa, Kerala and the Andamans are all at their best now.
Booked a 6N Shimla–Manali trip for eight of us. The Tempo Traveller was clean, the driver knew every shortcut around the Kullu traffic, and the final bill matched the quote to the rupee. No surprise charges at the end, which is more than I can say for the last agent we used.
Our Leh–Nubra–Pangong package got reworked twice after we shifted our dates, with no fuss and no rebooking fee. They had an oxygen cylinder in the car and insisted we spend the first full day in Leh doing nothing, which turned out to be exactly the right call.
Kashmir 5N with the houseboat night on Dal Lake. The hotels were a grade above what we had paid for, and the Pahalgam driver waited without complaint while we lost track of time in Betaab Valley. Only gripe is the Gulmarg day started painfully early.
